The $129 Lunch & Gin/Beer Upgrade tour includes two — a shared antipasto for the table plus an individual main — also with a glass. It is the cheaper of the two, includes more food, and visits four hand-picked cellar doors. It is also adults only, which rules it out for some groups.

The Chandon trap on the flagship tour

Worth knowing if you were planning to book the valley’s most-reviewed day and eat well.

That tour stops for lunch at Quarters Restaurant at Hubert Estate, where you order and pay yourself. You may instead book your own table at Domaine Chandon — but doing so means separating from the group, arranging it with the operator the day before, and missing the St Huberts tasting entirely.

It is a genuine option and some people take it. Just understand that you are trading a cellar door for a better lunch, on a tour you chose for its cellar doors.

Dietary requirements

The included-lunch tours handle this better, simply because the operator has booked the table. One states that all dietary requirements are catered for at its lunch stop; the two-course tour serves a shared antipasto followed by individual mains, which is the easiest format to adapt.

On a pay-your-own stop you are ordering from a normal restaurant menu, which is usually fine and occasionally not — one operator notes that dietary options can be limited at its midday venue. If it matters, message the operator before booking rather than on the day.

What to book
