Yarra Valley Sparkling Tours

First, the pedantic bit, because it saves confusion at the cellar door: none of this is Champagne. Champagne is a protected name for sparkling wine from one region of France. What the Yarra Valley makes is traditional-method sparkling — the same second fermentation in the bottle, the same grapes, a different postcode.

Why sparkling, and why here

Cool climate. The Yarra sits at the southern, cooler end of Australian wine growing, which keeps acidity in the grapes and ripens Chardonnay and Pinot Noir more slowly than the warm regions further north. Those two grapes and that acidity are precisely what traditional-method sparkling is built from, which is why a French house chose this valley rather than the Barossa or the Hunter.

It is also why the still wines here taste the way they do — lighter, more tightly wound, with Shiraz that reads peppery rather than jammy. If that appeals more than big warm-climate reds, you have come to the right valley.

The four tours that stop at Chandon

The one built around sparkling is the Wine, Chandon and Kangaroo Safari tour at $140. It takes eleven guests, which is the smallest published group size in the region, and it runs a deliberately late departure from Federation Square so the last stop lands at golden hour.

Chandon is the centrepiece: a sparkling tasting with time to buy lunch overlooking the vineyard. Then Yering Station for still wine, the Yarra Valley Dairy for cheese, the Chocolaterie, and a wildlife stop at dusk where kangaroos come out to feed. It holds 4.9 from 353 reviews.

What the Chandon visit actually is

Worth setting expectations. This is a cellar-door tasting with a view, not a tour of the production hall. The kangaroos are not guaranteed, and the operator says so

Credit where it is due: this listing is unusually straightforward about it. Sightings are common but wildlife is never guaranteed, and the tour visits a known location at golden hour to give itself the best chance.

That timing is also why the tour runs later than the others and gets back to Melbourne in the evening. If you want the kangaroos, the late finish is not an inconvenience — it is the mechanism.

Practical notes

The tour takes children from three, though only adults may drink; Australian licensing puts that at 18. Lunch is not included. The operator suggests bringing a camera and some cash, and notes that dietary options can be limited at the midday stop, which is worth planning around.
