Melbourne: Yarra Valley Food, Wine, Chocolate & Gin Tour

4.7 (173 verified reviews)

About This Experience

At $71 this is the least expensive Yarra Valley tour that includes transport from Melbourne, and the inclusions list is longer than the price suggests. Three wineries with all wine tastings covered, a guided chocolate tasting, a stop at the Yarra Valley Strawberry Farm for fruit tasting, and a bottle of wine for every full-paying adult to take home.

The drive is part of the product rather than dead time. The route runs through historic towns with a driver-guide who talks about the valley and the wider Melbourne region, and kangaroo and other wildlife sightings along the way are listed as part of the day.

What is not included is lunch, which you order à la carte at the winery, and the gin tasting at Rochford Wines, priced at $25 a head on the day. Neither is hidden -- both are stated plainly in the listing -- but both need adding to the $71 if you want to compare this tour with one that includes a meal.

Two conditions worth knowing before you book. The tour requires four people booked to run, and the minimum age is 14. It operates rain or shine.

For eight hours with three cellar doors, tastings included and a bottle to take home, this is the clearest value in the region -- which is why it holds 4.7 from 173 reviews at a price nothing else matches.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.7/5 by 173 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

Mel was a great guide with a wealth of local knowledge. With a small group Mel was able to keep the day on track but with flexibility on time at each venue. Would recommend this tour.

Rick was an excellent guide. Gave a lot of history about the wine industry in Australia. Chocolate stop was amazing and the wineries were a lot of fun. Just the right amount of wineries to visit. We even made an extra stop at a dairy farm to do some cheese tasting at the request of one of the other tour members. This was great flexibility on Rick’s part. And to top it off, even though we were told that tour would not include a bottle of wine as was originally mentioned in the booking because the promotion had ended, Rick did everyone a bottle of wine. A nice surprise to end the trip. Well worth the money.

It's always wonderful when you are in a beautiful country, guided by someone who knows, loves and cares for that land. Our guide Melanie took us beyond history and culture to share insights about the small details of what we were seeing. Three fruits, 12 chocolates, 11 different wines and 4 styles of gin later, we were sated physically and intellectually.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this tour so much cheaper than the others?

Because lunch and spirits sit outside the price. The wine tastings at three wineries, the guided chocolate tasting, the strawberry farm and the transport are all included; the meal is à la carte at the winery and the gin tasting at Rochford is $25 extra.

Do I really get a bottle of wine to take home?

Yes, one bottle per full-paying adult, included in the ticket price. It is unusual in this region and is a meaningful part of what the $71 covers.

Will the tour definitely run?

It requires four people booked to operate. If numbers are not met the departure may not run, so book early for a specific date rather than the day before. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours ahead.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes, 14 and over.

How much is the gin tasting?

$25 per person at Rochford Wines, paid on the day. It is optional and clearly excluded from the ticket price.

What happens if it rains?

The tour runs rain or shine. Cellar doors are indoors, so weather changes the view rather than the day.

Will we see kangaroos?

Kangaroo and Australian wildlife sightings are listed as part of the scenic drive. As with any wild animal they cannot be guaranteed, but the route is chosen with them in mind.
