Best Yarra Valley Wineries

Every “best wineries” list is somebody’s opinion. This one is a count. We took all thirty-nine tour itineraries on this site and tallied which cellar doors the operators actually book — people who do this every day, who know which rooms handle a group well, and who lose money when a stop disappoints.

The result is a useful list, and one honest caveat: the single most-visited venue in the Yarra Valley is not a winery at all.

The count

For comparison: the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie appears on seventeen itineraries, more than twice as often as the leading winery, and Healesville Sanctuary on four. That is the shape of the market here, and it is why counting cellar doors rather than stops matters so much when you book.

What each of the leaders is actually like

Yering Station — the historic one. The Ryrie brothers planted Victoria’s first vines on this site in 1838, and the modern cellar door builds its tastings around the valley’s three heartland grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. It is a larger, polished operation with a restaurant attached, which is exactly why seven tours can put a group through it.

Soumah — down a country lane with views to the Warramate hills, and the one that surprises people. It specialises in northern Italian and south-eastern French varieties rather than the usual Australian line-up, and its trattoria serves the food to match.

St Huberts — six tours, and worth knowing that several of them sell a paid gin or whisky tasting here on top of the wine. If a listing mentions spirits and names St Huberts, that is usually an upgrade rather than an inclusion.

Rochford Wines — another of the large, well-organised cellar doors with a full restaurant. Also the venue where one tour prices its gin tasting at $25 a head.

Domaine Chandon — the sparkling house at Coldstream, founded by Moët & Chandon. Four tours stop here and it has a page of its own.

De Bortoli — appears less often as a tasting stop but turns up on the Yering Station tour as a cheese platter, which is what its cellar door is known for locally.

The pattern in the list

The wineries the tours use most are the ones that can host a group: bigger tasting rooms, staff who pour for twenty, a kitchen. That is a real constraint, not a judgement about the wine, and it explains why Yering Station and St Huberts appear seven and six times while excellent small producers appear once or not at all.

If your list of must-visit cellar doors includes boutique names, a coach will not get you there. Either take a small-group tour running an eleven or fifteen-seat van, which opens up producers a bus cannot reach, or book a private tour and name them yourself. That is the single thing private buys that nothing else does.

Visiting a cellar door without a tour

Three are bookable directly, no bus involved: Punt Road in Lilydale for an hour of wine and cider tasting at $29, Punt Road at Yarra Glen for a ninety-minute food and wine experience at $47, and a Dixons Creek winery for two hours of cheese and wine blending at $79.

Everything else needs transport, and the reason is on Yarra Valley without a car — the cellar doors sit several kilometres apart on country roads that no useful bus serves.

Which tour visits the most of them
